Looks like we made it! We survived the Y2K bug and nothing happened. The good news was the Billboard charts made it through fine. Our beloved hit barometer did not get backdated to 1900 and there weren’t any screwy chart shakeups. The world partied like 1999 and now it’s back to business. The economy was at its peak during this time, the Dot.com era, and the internet was taking over everything we do. The internet was quickly monopolized our society in the 21st century. The computer revolution became a major part of how we purchased and listened to music. In fact, Billboard Magazine initiated the Top Internet Album Sales chart in 1999. It was a move to keep up with the ever increasing trends of consumer tastes. Billboard was back and ready to go for all new chart action. A new year begins along with a new century and the dawn of a new millennia.
In the last decade, Billboard’s HOT 100 Singles went through major changes to its charting methods. The Billboard Hot 100 chart computes a precise point of sales and now airplay tracks can enter the chart without a single release. It was a unique time period for the Billboard Hot 100 chart which lasted into the early 2000s. The fluctuating singles market and the Hot 100 Airplay’s further expansion into other genres played a big part in this. The biggest thing about to come to rock the music industry were digital downloads, otherwise known as MP3s. MP3s are digital/non physical forms of music played through MP3 players. MP3s originally began as an audio coding standard and it had the ability to record and play music in crystal, clear sound. The MP3 format was invented by the MPEG Group in 1991 in Germany. Several people worked on the project but the accredited inventors were Ernst Eberlein, Thomas Sporer, Karhl Heinz Brandenburg, Bern Grill and Bernd Kurten. I t is the German company Fraunhofer-Gesellshaft that released the license for the new music technology. It was first known as MPEG-1. Digital downloads caught on in small numbers in the late 90s. Napster became a peer to peer file sharing software used to download and upload music files, MP3s. Napster was developed and founded by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker.
In 2000, Napster took off as a popular way to download and listen to the latest music without going to the store to purchase the latest singles and some cases, albums. You could now get the latest and greatest songs downloaded to your computer and it didn’t cost a thing. However, Napster’s popularity was short lived. The biggest problem with Napster was the lack of control over copyrighted material. The other thing was that music artists and record companies were losing out of their profits. It almost came across as stealing music. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) eventually got involved, which forced Napster to shut down its network.
So getting back to the popular trends in 2000, what was in the forecast for our favorite hit chart for 2000? First, let’s look back at 1999. In ‘99, it was an action packed year with pop music making a major comeback along with Latin pop with well established artists continuing their success on the chart. So, much of that popular trend continued on in the year 2000 along with many other varieties of music. The top hits on the Billboard HOT 100 gave us more teen pop songs, love songs, Latin flavored hits, girl groups, post grunge, and a superstar boy band. Some of the biggest chart toppers from 1999 came back again to reclaim their place at the top during 2000. Yes that lighthearted feel stayed with us in the early part of the decade. There were also some rather introspective and even inspirational songs within all of the effervescence. After all, we got through 1999 without a scratch. So let’s keep it going with the happy go lucky feel. The new bubblegum/teen pop era which began around 1997 reached a fevered pitch this year. There was a bigger flow of hits this year which made it even more interesting. Indeed, there was still some life left in the singles market. Alrighty then, let’s get back to business for the new year. Sit back for a review of Billboard’s # 1 Singles of 2000.
1. What A Girl Wants – Christina Aguilera
January 15, 2000 – 2 Weeks at # 1
Christina Aguilera had quite the year in 1999. She came out of the bottle and scored a huge hit with the first single off of her debut album, “Genie in a Bottle.” Her single distributed by RCA Records spent 5 weeks at # 1 in the summer of 1999. After that, Christina Aguilera’s self-titled debut album, also released by RCA Records, hit # 1 in the fall of ‘99. So this girl was on the go and she needed a fresh follow up single to “ Genie In A Bottle .” Enter in “What A Girl Wants.”
“What A Girl Wants” got its start on the radio airwaves and MTV video rotation. The song was penned byShelly Peiken who had composed the lyrics on the back of a receipt. How interesting is that? “What A Girl Wants” was yet another teeny bopper song. She explores simply what she wants and what makes her happy. It’s all about that special boy who knows what she wants and makes her happy. Sounds like they have ESP there doesn’t it? Hey, it’s a cute teenage romance song. There is always a market for that and Christina was the right girl for it throughout 1999-2000.
After the genie flew out of the bottle and on to platinum sales, Christina’s “What A Girl Wants” began to make an impact on radio stations. In November 1999, “What A Girl Wants” entered in the HOT 100 at # 71. From there, it went to 51 → 28 → 18. There is some movement going on there and it’s just based on the airplay alone. C’mon It’s December RCA Records, all those young girls would love to purchase Christina Aguilera’s new single and it would be a great Christmas present for them. Don’t be stingy RCA Records, we need a single for Christina’s new song.
So “What A Girl Wants” got its release at the end of Christmas week of ’99. It included a radio edit of her latest song and an unreleased track, “We’re A Miracle.” The world didn’t end from Y2K and we made it to the year 2000. The ever popular “Smooth” by Santana and Rob Thomas spent its 12th week at the top. No one could touch this song even with contenders like Lou Bega, Marc Anthony and fellow teen pop singer, Jessica Simpson. Here’s a look at the top 10 for the first full week of 2000.
Billboard Magazine reported that Christina Aguilera’s “What A Girl Wants” sold over 9,000 total copies on the previous week. As you can see, there was not much movement going on in the top 10. So what were Christina Aguilera’s chances of scoring a # 1 single with her current single at # 11? We got that answer to that burning question on the following week.
Yes, Christina Aguilera’s “What A Girl Wants” scoots up to # 1 on the week of January 15, 2000. She made a big jump from # 11. She holds a special place for the Billboard Hot 100. “What A Girl Wants” became the first number one single of 2000 and of the millennia. Her single brought in 140,500 units of sales on the preceding week, while making the impressive leap outside of the top 10. It goes to show you that releasing a single when the airplay was at its peak still worked on the HOT 100. With that, this girl got what she wants!
“What A Girl Wants” spent 2 weeks at # 1 and it was eventually awarded a Gold RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certification. Just six months before, Christina Aguilera achieved her first # 1 single and now she came back with a second # 1 single. Christina Aguilera’s debut album was now multi-platinum, selling millions of copies. She would begin her first tour in 2000 with special guest stars, Destiny’s Child. So here it is. The first # 1 single of 2000 and we all got what we want, a # 1 single to kick off the new century and millennia!
2. I Knew I Loved You – Savage Garden
January 29, 2000 – 4 Weeks at # 1
The Aussie duo, Savage Garden, set the world on fire in the late ‘90s with their singles: I Want You, Truly Madly Deeply and To The Moon and Back. Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply was a phenomenally popular song back in 1998 . Their single spent 52 weeks on the chart and 26 weeks in the top ten alone. Well, we needed more of the Australian duo. This time Savage Garden was back with a new soft rock ballad, “I Knew I Loved You.” The stylish video for the song featured actress Kirsten Dunst and took place on a New York City subway train. There are various shots of people in the subway train. Of course, the song title sets up the premise. It’s all about love at first sight, and knowing that he loved her before they met. Ahh, those pop songs about love never go out of style.
So this little ditty of a song easily found its way to radio stations. It was a great song for the musical mainstream and fit in perfectly for the time period. So Savage Garden’s latest song hit the HOT 100 in October of ‘99. From there, the song was on the move. “I Knew I Loved You” was already in the top ten by late 1999. However, we didn’t know whether we were going to make it out of 1999!
Lo and behold, we made it to 2000 but it looked like “I Knew Loved You” wore off its momentum. They must have been exhausted from all the Y2K hype. After all that, the Savage Garden single fell down to # 6.
It appeared that these guys were on the rebound. While Christina Aguilera kicked off the year with a # 1 single, Savage Garden went up to # 4 that week, then to # 2 on the following week. Finally, instead of a Christmas miracle a New Year’s miracle happened, Savage Garden’s “I Knew I Loved You” found it’s way to the top on the week of January 29th, 2000. It was their second number one single.
Interestingly, Savage Garden scored their major # 1 hit just two years ago at the end of January. This time the Australian dynamic duo spent a non consecutive 4 week stay at # 1. Oh, they also earned their third Gold RIAA single while their current album, Affirmation , went triple platinum. “3” is the lucky number for these guys. Savage Garden embarked on a major world tour to Asia, Africa, Australia (of course!), Europe, and North America. One more follow up single made it on to the Hot 100 in 2000 and after their Affirmation album, Savage Garden disappeared from the Hot 100. They split up in 2001. Both men have politely declined increasingly lucrative reunion offers, letting their songs continue to represent them instead. There is no doubt though, that Savage Garden left an indelible mark on the pop scene in the late 90s to 2000.
3. Thank God I Found You – Mariah Carey featuring Joe & 98 Degrees
February 19, 2000 – 1 Week at # 1
Well the ’90s sure had its share of chart toppers. Every decade on the Billboard chart, there is an artist who become regulars at the top. So our resident chart queen is back again claiming her throne at the top. Do you know who she is? Well, it’s Mariah Carey, our favorite chart diva who scored a # 1 song for every year during the 1990s! Yes, she crossed over into the new millennium and she got a little help with some friends. The very popular boy band, 98 Degrees and R&B singer Joe, chimes in with Mariah. They lend their voices and talent to create a hit in early 2000. In fact, Mariah Carey collaborated with many artists on her 1999 album, Rainbow . Mariah now gained more creative control and she brought in an all-star cast of musical artists for her latest album such as Jay-Z, Usher, and Snoop Dogg, as well as Missy Elliott, Joe, Da Brat, Master P, 98°, and Mystikal.
So who is Mariah so thankful to find? There must be a special someone in her life. Well, it’s another happy love song. The central theme of her special song is that she is thankful to find her special man. He lifts her spirits up and comforts her. She is thankful that she found him. He makes her feel emotions and he is her dreamlover and honey. There’s a play on words for you! It’s an ongoing saga with her. Mariah Carey played a big part in producing and writing this wonderful ballad.
“Thank God I Found You” found its way onto radio just as “Heartbreaker” spanned its 20 week run. This time “Thank God I Found You” entered the chart at # 82? Say What? Mariah Carey goes from # 1 debuts to a low # 82. What’s going on here? Apparently, the airplay points were not too strong yet plus no single was available at the time. You better work Mariah! Her song made its way into the top 40 by early 2000. Mariah’s record label decided that an actual single release could bolster up the song higher. So in February, “Thank God I Found You” bounced from # 22 up to # 2. It’s amazing what a single release can do for these song, isn’t it?
So could little Mariah establish herself for the new era in 2000 here? In the first two and a half weeks of sales, “Thank God I Found You” sold over 226,000 copies. Then the airplay impressions went up too. With everything on her side, “Thank You I Found You” hit # 1 on the week of February 19th, 2000. Credit also goes to Joe and 98 Degrees. So here we have our favorite 90s chart queen marking the third # 1 single for 2000. Her single spent 1 week at # 1 and just four weeks in the top ten. Eventually, the single was certified Gold for sales of over 500,000 copies and finished out an overall 20 week chart run. “Thank God I Found You” marked Mariah Carey’s 15th # 1 single. Indeed, there was a pot of gold at the end of her Rainbow album.
4. Amazed – Lonestar
March 4, 2000 – 2 Weeks at # 1
During the 90s, Country music saw a major growth in popularity and became a big part of mainstream music. When Billboard revised the chart in 98’, the Hot 100 more accurately measured popular tastes in music. Lonestar hailed from you guessed it from the Lonestar State, Texas. The group formed in the early 90s and experienced enormous success on the Billboard Country charts. In 1999, they released their third album, Lonely Grill. The first single releasedwas “Amazed.” “Amazed” was written by a team of songwriters: two of the writers, Chris Lindsey and Aimee Mayo, are a married couple, and the third, Marv Green, is their friend and songwriting partner.
When they wrote the song, Lindsey and Mayo were in the process of falling in love, and drew upon their burgeoning romance for inspiration. “Our feelings for each other just started coming out as we were writing.” The song was composed in a candlelit room to give it a romantic feel. “Amazed” made it to # 1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart in the summer of 1999, staying 8 weeks at the top. Then it was time for the Lonestar song to venture on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lonestar had a heck of a ride on the Billboard Hot 100. While, “Amazed” was spending an amazing 8 weeks at # 1 on the country chart, the song made its debut on the Hot 100 in June ’99. The song began mainly as an airplay track with a limited amount of 7″ vinyl singles available. The song rose up slowly throughout the summer of 1999, fluctuated for a bit within the top 40. Eventually it peaked at # 24. From there it fell down and went off the chart after its initial 20 week run. So at least it was a minor hit right?
The audience impressions seemed to linger on for the airplay. Around Christmas time of 1999, there was renewed interest in the Lonestar song. So the Lonestar guys gave it a second round. On the week of Christmas of ’99, “Amazed” reentered the Billboard Hot 100 at # 45 but lost its bullet one week after, stalling at # 45.
Then there seemed to be a rebound where it bounced up to # 23. The airplay points and the audience impressions were helping but Lonestar needed a single from their record label, BNA Entertainment. C’mon BNA let’s release a single, they need a big push. This Lonestar song has lots of potential.
There, that’s better. After some fluctuation and pushbacks, Lonestar’s “Amazed” found its way to # 3 soon after jumping from # 18.
Alright, this country song is heating up and I see a # 1 song looming. From there, “Amazed” goes 3 to 1! “Amazed” finally reached its pinnacle on March of 2000 hitting # 1, marking the bands first # 1 single on the Hot 100. Lonestar’s perseverance paid off. It took 31 weeks for “Amazed” to hit # 1 on the week of March 4, 2000.
It appeared to be the longest time for any single to make it to the top on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, “Amazed” actually did peak in 1999 at # 24. Their song fell off the chart after 20 weeks and reentered. So on the single’s second run, it took 10 weeks to reach the top. Lonestar’s “Amazed” spanned a total 35 weeks on the chart during its second time. Here is a rundown of the chart action for Lonestar’s “Amazed.”
- 1999 – #24, 20 weeks on the Hot 100, 15 weeks in the top 40
- 2000 – # 1 for 2 weeks, 35 weeks on the Hot 100, 29 weeks in the top 40, 12 weeks in the top 10
Needless to say, Lonestar’s Amazing accomplished an amazing run on the Hot 100 and just kept getting better for them! “Amazed” received a Gold RIAA certification in excess of 500,000 copies. “Amazed” is the most popular song choice for UK newlyweds’ first dances as well as here in the states. “Amazed” became a signature song for the band and a staple for their live performances. Lonestar continued their chart presence on the Hot 100 with more top 40 hits during the 2000s.
5. Say My Name – Destiny’s Child
March 18, 2000 – 3 Weeks at # 1
In the musical landscape of ‘99-‘00, there were boy bands, teen pop idols and Latin Pop. There was also a hot girl group to even out the diverse sounds happening in the mainstream. The writing is on the wall for this group, Destiny’s Child . They already struck gold garnering a number one single in 1999 with “Bills, Bills, Bills.” Soon after, the girls came out with their second album, The Writing’s On The Wall . Yes, this is the album which they hoped to catapult them into superstardom. Alright girls, let’s release another three word song, this one is titled “Bug A Boo.” Well it turned out that “Bug A Boo” caught a bug on the Hot 100 and only got to # 33. It probably didn’t help matters that the song was only an album cut. On top of that, there was drama in the group.
Destiny’s Child consisted of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett since the mid ’90s. The foursome recorded their second album together and it looked like they’d be together forever. Well, it was not the case. LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett departed from the group. The group’s manager was none-other than Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles. Luckett and Robertson claimed Mathew Knowles kept a significant amount of the group’s profits while playing favorites with Knowles and Rowland. Uh-oh catfight, those claws were out! To make matters worse, a spiffy new music video was released with what would be their third single, “Say My Name” with all four members. It was the crisis that could have ended the group. Roberson and Luckett left the group at the start of 2000. The former members filed a lawsuit against Mathew Knowles and their former bandmates for breach of partnership and fiduciary duties. However, two new members joined the Destiny’s Child lineup in February 2000, Michelle Williams and Farah Franklin.
Okay, let’s get to the single action. “Say My Name” got its release on the week of Christmas in 1999. The song rose up the chart but got kicked down within the top 20 during February of 2000. So it looked like another miss for the girls. Soon enough, a retail single release helped “Say My Name” go upwards. It made a move from 17-14 then boom to # 1. Destiny’s Child scored their second # 1 song on the week of March, 18 2000. “Say My Name” stayed for 3 weeks at number one. It’s safe to say these girls were on their way to superstardom.
Soon after, Destiny’s Child began a major tour. However, Farah Franklin left the group after five months. Franklin had missed promotional appearances and concerts. It also seemed Farah Franklin could not handle the stress of being in such a popular group. Oh, as for the drama with LaTavia Roberson and Latoya Luckett, they dropped the portion of their lawsuit aimed at Rowland and Knowles in exchange for a settlement. Destiny’s Child now established themselves as one of the biggest musical groups of 2000. It would only get bigger for them, congrats ladies.
6. Maria, Maria – Santana featuring The Product G & B
April 8, 2000 – 10 Weeks at # 1
Santana is the man and the legend. A whole new world and a new fanbase opened up for the artist. Santana’s collaboration with Rob Thomas “Smooth” captivated us in 1999 and smoothed it out for 12 weeks at # 1 to 2000. Billboard ranked it as the most successful song of the 90s. “Smooth” won three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Santana’s “Supernatural” album reached supernatural heights of success. The album also spent 12 weeks at the top on the Billboard Top 200 Albums. Its 12 times a charm there! Santana was in demand and we wanted to hear more from the legendary artist. Santana infused his soulful Latin music with the sounds modern music and contemporary artistw on his Supernatural album. The follow up to “Smooth” arrived on the chart in February 2000. The latest single featured the duo The Product G&B. Now, the group Santana collaborated with, The Product G&B , formed in 1998. They are an American R&B influenced duo made up of David McRae also known as Sincere Gubano and Marvin Moore-Hough also known as Money Harm.
“Maria Maria” centers around a beautiful and exotic woman noticed in a troubled urban neighborhood. She is a dreamer seeking greener pasture. She is hoping to make a difference and leave behind her troubled surroundings. She symbolizes hopes and dreams. The story of “Maria Maria” was told from a third person perspective. Some speculate that Maria survived on a not so respectable profession.
The song was produced by Wyclef Jean of the Hip Hop group, The Fugees, and Jerry Duplessis. When I first heard the guitar riff, I knew that it sounded familiar. Indeed, it was a recognizable melody. WyclefJean has revealed that the melody riff was inspired by the Wu-Tang Clan song “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit.”
“Maria Maria” made an excellent debut at # 15 on the Hot 100. Just at the start of its run, “Maria Maria” was destined to be a big hit for Santana. The sales were big and it only needed to catch up in airplay to reach the top. In fact, when “Maria Maria jumped to # 8 on its second week, the Santana/Rob Thomas megahit “Smooth” was at # 5 on that very same week! Destiny’s Child ran out of steam when their single lost the bullet on its third week at # 1. So naturally “Maria Maria” easily slipped into the top spot on the week of April 8th in the year 2000. Like the Energizer bunny, “Maria Maria” kept on going and going at the # 1 spot. By June, Santana and The Product G & B were already 9 weeks at # 1 and then 10 weeks at # 1.
The last Santana single spilled over into 2000 with 12 weeks at # 1. So could it be another 12 week run at the top? Or could the song spend even more time at the top? Not the case, “Maria Maria” finished out a 10 week stay at # 1. The next song moved into the top but man did “Maria Maria” take a dive from number one. It fell from # 1 down to # 8 , ouch! This was due to an unexpected surprise in the top ten. “Maria Maria” became a Platinum single. It was also the fifth # 1 single to spend 11 weeks at # 1 in chart history at this time. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
7. Try Again – Aaliyah
June 17, 2000 – 1 Week at # 1
Lift yourself up and try again. If at first you don’t succeed, “Try Again!” Such great philosophical lyrics, I enjoy these types of songs. It’s not mindless or happy go lucky, there is some actual depth to it. Trying again is an important concept in life. You fall off the bike, you get back on. Try and try again folks.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in 1979 in Brooklyn NY and then relocated to Detroit, Michigan. She got her mainstream start in 1994. Her breakthrough hit, Back and Forth hit the top 5 that year and she continued to rack up more hit singles on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard R&B charts. In addition to her music career, Aaliyah branched out into acting and modeling. Aaliyah also graduated from the prestigious Detroit High School for the Fine & Performing Arts with a 4.0 GPA average. You go girl, you’re doing great!
2000 solidified a special occasion for Aaliyah. She made her film debut in the action film, Romeo Must Die . The film was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak in his directorial debut, with fight choreography by Corey Yuen. Jet Li and Aaliyah were the main stars for Romeo Must Die. Rapper, DMX, is also one of players in the movie. The film was a major box office success while Aaliyah received praise for her acting debut.
Aaliyah recorded four tracks for the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. The first song released from the soundtrack album was Aaliyah’s “Try Again.” As I had mentioned, “Try Again” was a great message of picking yourself and going at it again. The song keeps it real, especially with these direct lyrics, “ And if at first you don’t succeed, Then dust yourself off and try again. ” The lyrical content seems to imply that it revolves around dating and how it becomes complicated if there is no communication and no sparks. You think you did bad on that first date or the first try, just try again. Looking beyond the dating aspects of her song, you can certainly apply this i n every part of your life. The track was composed as an electronic dance infused R&B song with elements of hip-hop beats and funk grooves.
So, “Try Again” landed on the chart at # 59. Her song made its way within the top 40. By the end May, “Try Again” reached the top 10 based on the strength of the airplay. She inched up to # 6 when the Santana/The Product G&B hit marks its 10th week at # 1. Then the unexpected happened on the week of June 17th, 2000. Aaliyah jumped from # 6 to # 1 on that week. “Try Again” took advantage of the opportunity of the dry singles market that week. In addition to that, Aaliyah’s “Try Again” gained 5.5 million listeners to an approximate total of 92 million audience impressions. “Try Again” was one of the biggest songs of 2000 and still remains a popular to this day. Aaliyah’s “Try Again” spent an overall 32 weeks on the chart.
Aaliyah worked on yet another major film, Queen of The Damned , and released a self titled album in the following year. Tragedy struck the young musical artist in 2001. Aaliyah and her video crew completed work on a new video in the Bahamas. They all boarded a plane headed for Miami, Florida and the passenger plane carrying Aaliyah and her video crew crashed and burst into flames shortly after the plane took off. She was 22 years old at the time. It was such a tragic loss for a wonderful artist to loose her life at the peak of her career. Her music remains influential and she graced with her beauty along with her artistry.
Further Thoughts on Aaliyah’s “Try Again”
Aaliyah’s “Try Again” has a major historical place in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The week ending June 17th of 2000 is a week that stands out for the chart. In my above review of “Try Again” there is no mention of a single release for her song. That is because, there was no retail single for Aaliyah’s “Try Again.” That’s right, Aaliyah’s “Try Again” reached the top based purely on airplay. On the week of her # 1 hit, “Try Again” accomplished a large jump in its audience to seize the top, gaining 5.5 million listeners to reach a grand total of 92 million audience impressions. The top ten was particularly soft. Here is a snapshot for the top ten on the week of June 17, 2000.
Much of the top ten lost their bullets. Santana’s ” Maria Maria” exhausted its resources and it was on its way down. Interestingly, Vertical Horizon’s was awarded the Greatest Gainer/Airplay but it was behind in airplay points with not much of any sales. In fact, overall single sales were very barren for this week. The stars aligned perfectly for Aaliyah to soar to the top. She also managed to dethrone one of the biggest songs of the year, “Maria Maria” which achieved platinum sales. A special congrats goes to Aaliyah for not only achieving a # 1 single but achieving a special milestone in the history of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart!
8. Be With You – Enrique Iglesias
June 24, 2000 – 3 Weeks at # 1
The heartthrob who danced with us in 1999 struck a chord in the musical scenery. Mainstream record labels were after Iglesias to sign him on to their record company. Eventually, Iglesias signed on for a multi-album deal with Interscope Records. Enrique recorded and released his first full CD in English. His first album has the title, Enrique , released in late 1999.
His next single released was “Be With You.” The single was composed as an uptempo dance song. His latest single had all the aspects of mainstream appeal. The listener audience gave his song a decent impression and his song, “Be With You” entered the chart at # 63. “Be With You” first had a limited single release. It primarily was available as a 12″ Vinyl single. However, “Be With You” saw major growth while going up in the top 10. Just in time, “Be With You” saw a wider single release while retailers also gave it a stronger push. In fact, Enrique’s single went from 40-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 sales component. With that, “Be With You” jumped from # 4 to # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while Aaliyah’s “Try Again” still maintained a bullet. This is the second # 1 single for Enrique Iglesias. He also began a major world tour performing in 16 different countries during 2000. The tour ended with a spectacularly big show at Lia Manoliu Stadium in Bucharest, Romania. The concert launched MTV Romania, with the video for “Love to See You Cry” being the first to be televised on the channel.
9. Everything You Want – Vertical Horizon
July 15, 2000 – 1 Weeks at # 1
Vertical Horizon formed as a duo in 1991 at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. The duo consisted of Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane. They relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1992 and they became a big part of the local rock scene. Their style is a mix of indie rock, post grunge and acoustic rock. Vertical Horizon grew to four members including two more band-mates, Ed Toth and Sean Hurley.
In mid 1999, Vertical Horizon released their third album, Everything You Want . The album got released by a major record label, RCA Records. One of the singles released off the album was you guessed it, “Everything You Want.” Their song centers around love and relationships particularly unrequited love. Matthew Scannell wrote the song. He described the background for the song in an interview: “I was in love with this girl who carried a lot of baggage. She kept turning to everyone except me for love and acceptance, and I wanted so much to help her. I wanted to be the one to give her everything she wanted, but I couldn’t.” Thus, the inspiration for the song title, “Everything You Want.”
So, “Everything You Want” first got released to college rock and modern rock radio stations. The band’s song eventually reached # 5 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. Then the band made their debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at # 70. Vertical Horizon made their way up as an airplay track. Finally, “Everything You Want” made to the top ten by its 14th week. By this time, the song was available as a vinyl single. “Everything You Want” witnessed some interesting chart action. Here’s the rundown, the bolded numbers represent the bulleted positions:
4/22 – 9 ⇒ 9 ⇒ 8 ⇒ 8 ⇒ 6 ⇒ 7 ⇒ 7 ⇒ 8 ⇒ 3
Well, it seemed Vertical Horizon went on a tour of the top ten. On the week of June 17th of 2000, “Everything You Want” interestingly received the Greatest Gainer/Airplay award at # 3 then lost it bullet at # 3 and fell down # 6. Hey guys, this is getting exhausting! I can’t keep up anymore. Moving onward, a real single was available in a CD single format. Well that certainly helped! Their bullet came back at # 6. Well I was “amazed” at what happened next.
On the week of July 15th of 2000, Vertical Horizon’s “Everything You Want” jumped to number one. It took 25 weeks to get to # 1 on its 26th week on the chart. Vertical Horizon’s first # 1 single stayed in the top ten for 19 weeks. The grand total weeks on the Hot 100 spanned 41 weeks. They were all over the place for their first number one single. One minor hit soon followed ,You’re A God, made the top thirty. After that, Vertical Horizon vanished from the Hot 100. The band still is active and they have gone through numerous lineup changes.
10. Bent – Matchbox Twenty
July 22, 2000 – 1 Weeks at # 1
Rob Thomas, lead singer of Matchbox Twenty, joined up with Santana in 1999 for the biggest and most memorable songs of the ’90s. You know which song that I’m talking about? Why its “Smooth.” Yes the song that survived through the so called Y2K bug. Together with Santana, Rob Thomas won three Grammys for “Smooth”, Record Of the Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.
In 2000, it was back to business as lead singer of his band, Matchbox Twenty. In 2000, the band released their second album, Mad Season. The song “Bent” was the first release off the album. So what are you guys bent about? “Bent” is about a man who is a mess and falling apart. He’s asking for help from his girlfriend who is losing interest. However, she may not have it together either. It seems like they need to help each other through their trouble. C’mon get your act together!
“Bent” got the highest debut for the week at # 60. It took ten weeks to get into the top ten and got to # 6 on its 12th week on the chart. In a very peculiar move, “Bent” leaped from 6 to 1. Isn’t that interesting, that “Bent” went from # 6 to # 1. The previous week’s single, “Everything You Want”, did the same move. Aaliyah’s “Try Again” also made the same jump. Nevertheless, Matchbox Twenty achieved their first number one single, “Bent” on the week of July 22, 2000. Coincidentally, “Bent” was the first actual retail single for Matchbox Twenty on the Billboard Hot 100. Their previous songs were album cuts. “Bent” single earned a Gold certification and boy did their single spend a long time on the chart. It was for a grand total of 39 weeks. Their next single, “If You’re Gone”, became another song about his future wife. The song hit # 5. Matchbox Twenty has not released an album since 2012, but are still together with most of their original members intact.
11. It’s Gonna Be Me – *NSYNC
July 29,2000 – 2 Weeks at # 1
OMG, it’s NSYNC! You heard that a lot in 2000 by all of their teenage and pre-teen girl fanbase. The New Kids On the Block passed the torch over to the NSYNC boys and they were larger than life. They were one of the biggest boy bands in pop music. NSYNC consisted of JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, and some guy named Justin Timberlake, have you ever heard of him?
The group also goes by asterisk, *NSYNC or simply NSYNC which I will be using. By this point, NSYNC were everywhere and at the height of their popularity. The boy band released three albums, and their videos were consistently the most requested on MTV’s TRL (Total Request Live). Along with that, NSYNC toured constantly and there were tons of NSYNC merchandise for their young fanbase. In 2000, they said bye bye bye to their manager, Lou Pearlman, good move there boys. They struck a deal with Jive Records and released their third album, No Strings Attached. Their album debuted at # 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums and the album sold 2.4 million copies in its first of sales! This set a phenomenal all time record. Could you imagine what the record stores were like on opening week?
Soon enough, there were singles pumping out from the album. The first one “Bye Bye Bye” hit # 4 by spring. It was on to the next single, “It’s Gonna Be Me”, although it almost sounded like “It’s Gonna Be MAEE! The song describes a woman who is jilted from past relationships. The main character of the song is a man who shows interest in her and he is not like her past lovers. He is the right man for her and it hits home with the chorus, “It’s Gonna Be Me!”
The song possessed major hit potential and it was already a buzz on radio stations. So “It’s Gonna Be Me” entered the chart at # 82 when “Bye Bye Bye” was still in the top ten. “It’s Gonna Be Me” made some quiet moves into the top 40. Then things began to heat up. NSYNC won the Greatest Gainer/Airplay twice but still no retail single yet. I knew Jive Records had something up their sleeve. When the song was in the top five, an official single release came out in cassette, vinyl and CD. Their single got to # 4 on the week of July 22, 2000. It was the same spot where “Bye Bye Bye” peaked just three months earlier.
Week ending April 22, 2000
Week ending July 22, 2000
“It’s Gonna Be Me” still had its bullet tying with “Bye Bye Bye at # 4. # 4 was NSYNC’s highest peak on the Billboard Hot 100. Could their latest single surpass that?
Why yes it did! On the following week, NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Maee!” shot up to # 1. It is accomplishment that not even their rival boy band, The Backstreet Boys accomplished. “It’s Gonna Be Me” sold well over 500,000 copies earning a Gold RIAA while their album, No Strings Attached, had already sold well into the millions.
NSYNC were at the pinnacle of their success and they cemented themselves as superstars and where known all over the world. NSYNC performed at the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show with a back and forth medley of NSYNC’s two biggest songs, “Bye Bye Bye” and It’s “Gonna Be Me” with Aerosmith. This time Steve Tyler actually sang the “me” part correctly. NSYNC released one more album in 2001 with the title, Celebrity . The group went on a hiatus in 2002 and eventually split up. Some members of the group have performed together since then. There is one guy from NSYNC who went on to pursue a solo career in music and movies. Do you know his name?
12. Incomplete –Sisqó
August 12, 2000 – 2 Weeks at # 1
So much turnover at the top, we’re already at the 12th # 1 song. At the same time, it adds some flavor to the top. So let’s move on to our next song. Sisqo Mr. Thong, thong, thong, thong, thong created a catchy song for 2000, Thong Song, that became all the rage and immensely popular.
Sisqó whose real name is Mark Althavan Andrews who hails from the R&B group Dru Hill. Dru Hill is in reference to the Druid Hill neighborhood in Baltimore, MD. The 4 member group scored 3 top ten singles in the late 90s on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and 3 number one singles on the Billboard R&B Singles chart. Sisqó released his own solo album aptly titled, Unleash The Dragon . After Sisqó’s ode to thongs was a hit, it was time for a new single off the album. Otherwise, Sisqó would have been a one hit wonder. Enter in the next song, “Incomplete.” “Incomplete” slows it down this time. The R&B slow jam features Sisqó singing about that special lady who would make his life complete. Even with all his accolades and his material possessions, he does not feel complete without that special lady in his life.
So it’s time to complete the Sisqó saga. “Incomplete” entered the Hot 100 at # 77. However, it seemed fluctuate in the bottom 50 of the chart but stopped cold at # 61 for three weeks losing its bullet. Alright Sisqó, it’s time to unleash your inner dragon. Spit out your ferocious flames.
Only a move to # 55, that’s not going to do anything. Lets try it again and spit out those flames, Sisqó the Dragon!
55 to # 2, now the fire breathing dragon annihilates the competition! It puts Sisqó into the record books. On August 4th of 1958, Italian singer Domenico Modugno entered the Hot 100 at No. 54 with his song “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare).” On the following week his single made a spectacular leap from 54 to 2. It remained the biggest jump to the runner up spot, # 2. The commercial release of “Incomplete” propelled the single from 55 -2, besting the “Volare” move by just one notch. Now Sisqó takes over the amazing record for the biggest jump to # 2, way to go there dragon!
NSYNC was losing their momentum on that week and soon enough, it was bye bye bye for NSYNC. With such a huge sales surge, Sisqó flew into the # 1 spot.
He grabbed the top spot for two weeks and garnered Platinum sales for “Incomplete.” After the success of his singles and album, there was no further chart hits for Sisqó. The artist ventured into acting and reunited with Dru Hill.
13. Doesn’t Really Matter – Janet
August 26, 2000 – 3 Weeks at # 1
Yes, it does matter. You’re still going strong well into 2000. It looked as though, Janet Jackson now went by Janet. That’s right Janet baby. Janet Jackson branched out into acting while keeping her stride with her music. Janet Jackson had a leading role along with Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor II: The Klumps feature film. She also recorded a song for the film with the title, “Doesn’t Really Matter.” It was composed as a smooth, contemporary R&B song with some hints of electronic beats. Her song comments on her true love not being based on his appearance, but on what kind of person he really is and what is on the inside of him. The music video created for the song utilized state of the art technology and special effects costing a whopping $2.5 million.
Janet’s “Doesn’t Really Matter” made a modest debut on the chart at # 59. “Doesn’t Really Matter” went up to the top ten quietly, while also winning the Greatest gainer airplay award twice. When Janet got into the top ten, she easily leaped over the competition. While at # 5, she gained enough sales and kicked Sisqó out of the top spot. The ’90s chart queen reclaims her throne in the 2000s for a three week stay at the top. It marks Janet Jackson’s, oh excuse me, “Janet’s” ninth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Her single also sold over 699,000 copies earning her a Gold RIAA certification. Way to go Janet, her chart hits now spanned over three decades.
14. Music – Madonna
September 16, 2000 – 4 Weeks at # 1
Hey Mr. DJ, could you play the same note over and over again with generic funky, electronic beats? Madonna is back. She is the chameleon of pop music and once again riding the trends of the late ’90s and early 2000s. This time exploring the electronica music style which was popular at this time. Electronica emerged from the rave scene which also had its own musical form. Madonna produced and recorded an album in a simplistic user friendly form of the musical genre. Her album’s title was named, Music . The first song released from this album was also named “Music.” Isn’t that original?
So, Madonna’s soon to be single, “Music”, was all about well, music! The electronic sounds took over the entire premise of Madonna’s latest song. There are even cringeworthy lyrics in the song like “I like to boogie-woogie,” yeah okay there. Madonna incorporates yet another new image rocking that cowboy hat on the album, single and video.
As expected, Madonna’s “Music” had the highest debut on August 12th of 2000. Her song took off from her # 41 debut. “Music” made big gains in airplay winning the Greatest Gainer/Airplay award. Once her single was released, Janet’s days at the top were numbered. Uh-oh, that could lead to a cat fight. Madonna pushes 62,000 units of sales on its first week. Then “Music” sold 150,000 copies on the next week while # 1 sales. With such a large sales lead, Madonna dethroned Janet from the top on September 16, 2000. “Music” spanned 4 weeks at number one while selling 606,000 copies during its time at the top. It was her third longest run at the top next to, Take A Bow and Like A Virgin. Madonna had also released the Music album when her single was at # 1. Both the album and the single were # 1 on the first week of October. Madonna’s single, “Music” was an example of a single not diminishing album sales. The first week of sales for the Music album surpassed 400,000 units and her album would go on to sell 3 million copies. The single eventually sold over 1 million copies earning a Platinum RIAA certification. “Music” is Madonna’s 12th # 1 single and her last # 1 single to date.
15. Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) – Christina Aguilera
October 14, 2000 – 4 Weeks at # 1
Welcome back Christina, we missed you! The genie got out of the bottle and took over the charts while also going on a world tour. Christina began a world tour during 2000 with special guests, Destiny’s Child. Christina’s self titled debut album kept churning out the hit singles. Her first two singles got to the top, then her third single, “I Turn To You”, reached reached # 3. It was also her third international hit. That’s three times a charm there Christina. Her record label, RCA Records, saw the hit potential in her singles. So the next single, the fourth from her album, was “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).”
“Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” was composed as an uptempo pop song with a party vibe. The song was also written by Christina Aguilera along with other songwriters. It would be her fourth single from her mega-platinum album. Her song is about a boy whom she is interested in. It takes place likely at a party and she is giving him signals that she is interested in him.
While Christina’s last single, “I Turn To You” was falling down, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” had the highest debut at # 57. Her latest song went up in a normal fashion. Then she hit a major traffic jam in the top ten, on the week of September 30, 2000. Now, this provided for some interesting chart action. The top seven songs had stayed the same for two weeks when Christina’s song hit # 9.
September 23, 2000
The Christina Aguilera song spent another week at # 9. One week later, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” fell out of the top ten to # 11. It almost appeared that her song would only peak at # 9, but that was not the case. Her song did fall to # 11, but was still bulleted due to some shuffling around in the top ten. Coincidentally, the top five stayed the same that week.
October 7, 2000
However, that would all change in a calculated move by her record company. On that week of the move to # 11, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” became commercially available as a retail single. The airplay was also nearing its peak. So when you get a commercially available single with strong airplay, you know what happens?
That’s right, it’s a straight shoot to # 1! Just like her last # 1 single, “What A Girl Wants”, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” flew up from 11 to 1. This marks her third number one single from her debut album. It was also the last single released from her album. During this time, Christina Aguilera released her Spanish language Latin Pop album, Mi Reflejo (My Reflection). Her album performed very well on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums spending 19 weeks at the top.
16. With Arms Wide Open – Creed
November 11, 2000 – 1 Week at # 1
Creed is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida formed in 1993. The band consists of guitarist and vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, drummer Scott Phillps, and lead vocalist, Scott Stapp. There is one thing that I noticed about Scott Stapp. His vocals had a very similar resemblance to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. It’s an interesting speculation. Creed struggled for a while and finally landed a record deal with Wind-Up Records, a small independent record label. Creed hit at the right time and right place with their post grunge sound. The band had everything tailored for that style, especially the angsty lyrics with polished but distorted guitars.
Creed released their first album, My Own Prison , in 1997.They scored two hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks from the album in 1998, My Own Prison and Torn, not to be confused with Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn of course. With the success of their first album, it was on to their next one, Human Clay . Lead guitarist, Mark Tremonti has stated, Human Clay represents a crossroad which every man finds himself at in his life and the man of clay embodies “our actions, that what we are is up to us, that we lead our own path and make our own destiny.” Their second album explores spirituality, finding a meaning and purpose in life while keeping an introspective vibe throughout the album. Their two biggest songs on the album, “Higher” and this song, “With Arms Wide Open” further explore these concepts.
“With Arms Wide Open” entered the Hot 100 on May 13, 2000. ”With Arms Wide Open” had one crazy time on the chart. It almost looked like that it would not reach the top 40. Here is a play by play before it reached the top 40. The bolded songs are bulleted positions.
5/13 – 84 ⇒ 78 ⇒ 76 ⇒ 74 ⇒ 70 ⇒ 68 ⇒ 74 ⇒ 75 ⇒ 69 ⇒ 74 ⇒ 70 ⇒ 79 ⇒ 84 ⇒ 86 ⇒ 76 ⇒ 62 ⇒ 45
Now, that is one big roller coaster within the upper 60 to 90 range. It also hit # 74 three different times. There was light at the end of the tunnel and Creed opened their arms wide enough to go from 45 to 29. It took seventeen weeks to reach the top 40. The airplay was increasing and their song received the Power Pick/Airplay award for two weeks in a row. It looked like a long shot for the song to get anywhere, but “With Arms Wide Open” finally reached the top 10 on its 21st week.
Finally there was an enhanced CD single release of “With Arms Wide Open” in October. After 23 weeks on the Hot 100, it was about time! Creed’s chart points opened wider with a commercial single release. After a long haul, falling down and rebounding, Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open” finally hit # 1 on the week of Veteran’s Day, November 11th, 2000. It took 26 weeks for the single to reach # 1, the longest a single has taken to reach the top in a single chart run.
“With Arms Wide Open” began as an underdog and rose up to become a memorable song in the year 2000. The band’s previous hit song, “Higher” took on a slow rise to reach its peak position of # 7. It spent over a year on the Hot 100. Creed emerged as one of the biggest artists of the post grunge genre. There would be more top ten songs achieved by the band in the early 2000s.
17. Independent Women, Part I – Destiny’s Child
November 18, 2000 – 11 Weeks at # 1
Last but not least, we are at the final # 1 song of the year. Most of the time, it’s usually the biggest single of the year. It’s the single spending the most weeks at # 1. The one that wraps up the year and in this case, the year 2000. And who closes out the year with a grand finale? Well, they are the biggest stars of the year. The writing is in the wall for them and here we go!
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you….
Yes, Destiny’s Child got through their drama and proceeded to take the music sceneby storm. They now had their most familiar lineup of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Destiny’s Child scored their second # 1 single, “Say My Name”, and followed up with an astonishing 5 week stay at # 3 with their single, “ Jumpin, Jumpin .”
With the success of their album and singles, Destiny’s Child established themselves in the music mainstream and Entertainment moguls took notice of them. Their newest single had the title of “Independent Women Part I.” Beyoncé came up with the song knowing that she does not have to depend on anyone and that she is definitely an independent woman while also successful. She ventured into a recording studio on her own and recorded vocals for the first version of this song. The Destiny’s Child song promoted female independence. Their song is also known as simply, Independent Women. A whole pack of producers and studio engineers played around with her song using a sample from the Peabody’s Improbable History theme song. The song was recorded in May and July of 2000. Farah Franklin who was still in the group but only briefly in May also provided backing vocals. Farah Franklin left the group in July 20, 2000. A different and remixed version of the song was also made and Beyoncé‘s father and manager for the group, Mathew Knowles, submitted the song for the upcoming movie release, Charlie’s Angels . He submitted it without the group’s knowledge. Naughty Naughty Mathew Knowles, you should have checked with them!
Charlie’s Angels was a big budget movie tailor made to be a big blockbuster hit. The film starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Bill Murray. “Independent Women Part I” was put together with intent to also be a blockbuster hit and it became part of the film’s soundtrack. “Independent Women.” The “Independent Women” song was created with a synonymous feel to the Charlie’s Angel movie.
While Destiny’s Child were jumping and jumping at # 3 during September of 2000, Independent Women Part I got a lukewarm Hot Shot Debut at # 78. It took three weeks to get into the top 40 and it won the Greatest Gainer Airplay on multiple weeks. So now “Independent Women Part I” was heating up and burning up the airwaves. Soon enough, a 12” vinyl single and an enhanced CD maxi-single went on sale. The CD maxi-single featured 3 additional remixes of the song and a track Beyoncé wrote, 8 Days of Christmas. On the same week Independent Women hit # 1 in airplay, their single jumped up to # 1 on the Hot 100 for the week ending November 18th, 2000. Their hit single shot up to # 1 on its ninth week on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Independent Women Part I” had all the makings for a long run at the top. “Independent Women Part I” certainly did that with no song left to challenge Destiny’s Child, maintaining its bullet even by its 7th week at #1.
Then Destiny’s Child hit single, Independent Women Part I, spilled over to 2001, spending an amazing 11 weeks at # 1 .
What I found interesting, Independent Women spent 11 weeks at the the top but the single was neither certified Gold or Platinum. “Independent Women Part I” spanned 7 months total on the chart. “Independent Women” was ranked as the top single for Billboard’s Top 40 list for 2000. The hit single also spent time at # 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, The Billboard Dance Songs chart while also hitting the top internationally as well. Just as Destiny’s Child “Independent Women” was about to fall off the chart, a new single by the group was burning up the Hot 100. The Destiny’s Child women were phenomenal in 2000 and they created some of the most memorable music in the early 2000s.
DVD Singles
DVDs (Digital Versatile Disc) became a hottest new technology for home movie viewing by the late 90s. Popular music artists began to release DVD singles to promote their latest songs. These were usually music videos of their singles which also included extended versions of their songs and sometimes were audio recordings as well. The Billboard Hot 100 introduced DVD singles into their single family on the week ending December 16, 2000. Madonna’s “Music” was the first # 1 single to include a DVD single. The R&B and Country charts also included DVD singles beginning on this week. DVD single availability were noted by a (DV) next to the record label information.
We reach the end of 2000 and what a year it turned out to be. There were no longer any worries about Y2K and we survived! The party kept rolling on. It was also a class reunion for some of the artists this year. Christina Aguilera, Destiny’s Child, Santana, Enrique Iglesias, and Mariah Carey all came back with # 1 hits. Christina Aguilera and Destiny’s Child landed 2 number one singles as well as a # 3 hit in the same pattern, 1-3-1. Rob Thomas came back, although with his band Matchbox Twenty, from the runaway success of “Smooth” and finally reached the top with “Bent.” Longtime chart divas got into the action as well. In the first time in six years, there were no rap singles that hit # 1. It was a “poppy” year. While airplay played a big factor in chart movement, there were still some instances of commercial single releases that did not make a dent into album sales, Sisqó’s “Incomplete” and Madonna’s “Music” were prime examples. NSYNC were also successful with their commercial single releases while their album sold zillions!
According to Billboard Magazine, the overall sales of singles in 2000 totaled out to 51,043,000. It was a decline of 36.5% from 1999. Full length album sales saw one of the best years of sales, which rose up to a 4% increase with 785.1 million units sold for 2000. CD sales were up 9% to 706.3 million units over 1999’s total. The year 2000 was the biggest year for CD sales.
One big milestone belonged to Aaliyah. Her
single
, excuse me song, “Try Again” got to the top by just the strength of the airplay alone. She even knocked the Santana/The Product G&B single, “Maria Maria” from the top. In a peculiar observation, Billboard’s year-end top of the year did not even make this list. The top pick of 2000 was Faith Hill’s “Breathe” which spent five weeks at # 2. Billboard’s year-end tally is calculated by a singles’ cumulative total of both airplay and sales points. Buying trends of singles were beginning to show changes by 2000. Radio monitoring was now picking up airplay from nearly all formats. However, there was still a good number singles making it to the top. There were 17 # 1s altogether, the most that the Billboard Hot 100 has seen in nine years. Everything was peachy and much of the top songs reflected that era of good feelings.
Continue onward to 2001 , for even more interesting chart information.
